Land of the Long White Cloud: photo diary

New Zealand is a lot like Scotland: windy, hilly and cloudy!

We hired a car and drove outside of Wellington where we saw lots of sheep.
This shell mural is from the Chocolate Fish Cafe in Scorching Bay, Wellington. It is round by where Peter Jackson, the director of Lord of the Rings lives.

His production company is nearby. This is where they also did the special effects for Narnia and King Kong.
We did a long walk along the coast (5km) to see a seal colony. We were about to give up and go back, but when we turned a corner there were loads of seals lounging on the red rocks! We got quite close to them and watched them until the sun set, then walked the 5km back along the black coastal sand and rocks to the car.
We also saw a new and old kind of Maori meeting house. The one below is a new one in the national museum.

Wellington has a big beautiful harbour, and is surrounded by hills with houses built all over them. Some of them even have their own cable cars because it is so steep getting from the street to their front door!
